What is Guayusa?

Guayusa (pronounced gwhy-you-sa) is a herbal tea that comes from the leaves of the Ecuadorian holly tree, ilex guayusa. Guayusa is native to the Ecuadorian Amazon rainforest. Deeply embedded in Ecuadorian culture it has been drunk for thousands of years to improve energy levels and mental focus.


What does guayusa taste like?

Guayusa has a smooth, clean taste and a naturally slightly sweet flavour.

Is guayusa a type of tea?

Technically tea only comes from the leaves of the camellia sinensis plant (black or green tea). Anything that doesn’t come from camellia sinensis, such as guayusa, is a herbal tea.

How should I drink guayusa?

Guayusa is traditionally drunk as a hot drink on it’s own. It also works well mixed with mint or lemon as an hot or as an ice tea.

Is guayusa safe to drink?

Yes it has been drunk for thousands of years by Ecuadorian for a variety of reasons. They have used it to reduce their appetite and increases their focus and energy levels.


Does guayusa contain tannins?

No guayusa leaves don’t naturally contain tannins.

Does green/black tea (camelia sinensis) or coffee contain tannins?


How can tannins affect your health?

Tannins can not only stain your teeth but also stop iron absorption. One study has shown that tea consumption may reduce iron absorption by as much as 60% and coffee reduces its uptake by 50%. The tannins in both tea and coffee adversely affect iron availability, which could lead to iron deficiency or anaemia.

Does guayusa have a risk of PAH (Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons) during processing?

No our guayusa leaves are picked and washed and then dried using a high heat, natural gas-fired oven. They are not roasted or smoked. Roasting or smoking leaves can lead to the presence of PAH in other herbal teas such as yerba maté.

Does guayusa contain caffeine?

Yes it contains a level of caffeine inbetween tea and coffee. It also contains another stimulant called theobromine (also found in chocolate).

What is theobromine?

Theobrome is a stimulant which is naturally occuring in both chocolate and guayusa.

Is guayusa natural?

Yes it is completely natural. Guayusa comes from the leaves of guayusa trees. Our guayusa trees are grown without the use of artificial herbicides or fertilisers.

Guayusa VS Green Tea

Is guayusa just a type of green tea?

Green tea is unfermented leaves from the camellia sinensis plant. Guayusa tea comes from unfermented leaves of the ilex guayusa tree. So as guayusa comes from a different plant it has totally different taste and properties from your average green tea.


Do you source your Guayusa Ethically?

Yes, Freddie’s Guayusa Tea was started with a passion to conserve the Amazon rainforest in a way that added financial value to conservation and supported Ecuadorian people in a financially fair way. The Amazon is a huge carbon sink. Deforestation is said to be the second largest contributor to climate change,  it creates more CO2 emissions than transport worldwide. Giving people the chance to taste ethical and healthy products like Freddie’s Guayusa Tea is what drives our passion and company forward.

Is Freddie’s Guayusa Tea grown organically?

Freddie’s Tea isn’t currently organic certified as currently the £700 cost currently outweighs the benefit, but our guayusa is of course still grown without pesticides, or artificial fertilisers.

Is Freddie’s Guayusa Tea fair trade/fairtrade or fair trade certified?

Freddie’s Guayusa Tea goes over and above fairtrade standards. Our farmers have on average had a 30% increase in income since working in our supply chain.

You can buy Freddie’s Guayusa Tea online on Amazon, Ebay and Etsy and in some select health food shops and Cafe’s. Namely Olive Tree Organics in Kilburn, Energetic Health in Cobham and Archie Browns in Cornwall.


Why don’t you sell in zip seal/ bags?

We are passionate about not harming the environment in every way we can. Plastic zip seal bags are often thrown away after use. We try not to use non-recyclable plastic packaging if at all possible.

Is your packaging recyclable/reusable/compostable?

Yes our tins are re-useable and recyclable.


Should I drink guayusa before sport or studying?

By drinking guayusa before, during and after sport and exercise you would be joining athletes and Ecuadorains who drink guayusa for overall health and energy levels.
